Pros and Cons of Different Types of Flat Proof Tires

If you have decided to go the safest way for your construction vehicle and equip it with flat proof tires, you will do well to educate yourself on the various types you can choose from. Even though these tires are generally made to fulfill the same purpose, there are variations you need to delve into, if you want to make sure the product you are buying will best serve you.

Flat proof tires must be carefully chosen, since they will constantly be put to the test. If you are no expert, one of the first things you will have to educate yourself on is the various types of flat proof tires that you can choose from. Each of them comes with different characteristics and is best suited for certain type of work. That is why knowing these features will help you select the best tires. Here is detailed information on the pros and cons of the different types:

  • Tires made of layers heterogeneous solid rubber, which varies in density – this is the best type of tires to equip on vehicles that face tough conditions. You can expect these tires to perform great on metal scrap yards and rock quarries for example. The main reason why this type makes such a good option is because their sidewalls have high resistance to tears; plus they are considered to be the longest lasting. An additional benefit is that they provide a cushioned and comfortable ride, allowing for effective work. However, with all these benefits comes the highest price among all types of flat proof tires. Furthermore, these tires are the heaviest, which could introduce a difficulty, as that makes installation troublesome.
  • Tires made of homogeneous rubber – these are well-known as the economical class solid tires. They are cheap in comparison to the tires made of heterogeneous solid rubber and are a popular option among companies working with budget restrictions. Even though they are cheap, they are by no means low quality and offer relatively high work hours. Unfortunately, equipping these tires comes with a rather uncomfortable ride – they don’t cushion in any way. Like the previous type, these flat proof tires are very heavy, which could mean difficulty with installation. Another drawback is that they cannot be used along with over-the-tire tracks. A negative side to these tracks is also the fact that they cannot be re-treaded and re-capped.
  • Tires made of solid rubber, featuring holes in the sidewalls – the main benefit of these tires is that they are a great option in many applications. That is partially due to the fact that they offer a very comfortable cushioned ride, due to their semi-pneumatic nature. They are lighter than solid tires and can be easily used along with over-the-tire steel and rubber tracks. Their prices gravitate around the mid-tier products of this type. The holes on the side of tires have been reported to catch on debris when work on sites such as a scrap yard is involved. That is a possible drawback, as well as the fact that they cannot be re-treaded and re-capped.
  • Standard pneumatic tires filled with foam – these tires are widely considered as very convenient, in that the method of filling a tire with foam can be applied to pretty much any pneumatic tire. Some specific tires can even be re-treaded. However, while these tires are flat proof to some extent, they can still be damaged and drained of foam. The trouble mainly comes from the sidewalls, as they are quite vulnerable to tearing. These flat proof tires don’t come with such high work life as their solid rubber counterparts and they are not known to provide a comfortable ride.
  • Standard pneumatic tires lined with gel – another convenient way to make tires more resistant to puncture. It is easy to install and uninstall these, but just like the previous type, they do not come with 100% flat proof guarantee. Their sidewalls can still be gashed and torn.
Take your time in carefully choosing the right flat proof tires, if you don’t want to end up with a product that won’t be of any use. Take into account all factors and characteristics before making a purchase to maximize the benefits and minimize the potential downsides.
